My name is Mike Thomas and I'm an ultra-runner. I've competed in many 50 km ultra-races and self-supported adventures. My longest race to date was this spring running the Gorge 100 km thru Oregon. This fall we are planning an 150 km, 3 day run along the Wonderland Trail that encircles Mt. Rainer. I'm also the Race Director for the upcoming Valley Vertikiller race. I love exploring new trails and running up all the amazing network of mountains we are surrounded in, the burn to climb up those majestic peaks to have those 360 degree views is breathtaking, then to fly down is exhilarating. I look forward to sharing the knowledge of the trails while building your confidence to run 25 km whether it's for the upcoming Valley Vertikiller race or a fun run exploring the local trails.

I didn’t start off with big running goals. All I wanted to do was wear green, complete a 5 km St. Paddy’s Day Run, then drink beer at the after party! But running can be addicting for a girl like me that loves a challenge. I’ve now completed numerous races including many trail races and destination races in Florida and New Orleans. I’m thrilled to be instructing for Kintec and hope to show new runners how to find the balance of fitness and fun in their runs!

I started running back in February of 2014 as a way to encourage my son to also become active. Having never been a runner or even into athletics of any sort, I “ran” into some problems off the start and my friend suggested that I sign up for the Kintec Run Club in April. Upon completing the beginner clinic, I amazed that I was able to actually run 5k. I was then challenged to do the 10k clinic AND sign up for the 10K Vancouver Rock’n Roll in October 2014. I have since completed two 5k runs, four 10k races, my first half marathon on my 40th birthday (Whistler Half Marathon which was just a little hilly LOL) and a total of 9 half marathons. What I’m still surprised by is that at the two year mark, I went from not having ever run before to training for and completing a FULL marathon. Anything is possible with the right mindset, support and plan. What I like most about being a Run Leader is helping new runners step outside their comfort zone to see what they can achieve. Run Leaders got me to where I am today and I would like to pay it forward to new runners and share my love of running.

Since 2004, I have run in over 17 marathons, including 9 consecutive Vancouvers, over 20 ultramarathons, and several shorter races. Last summer I ran in my first 100 mile race – the Western States Endurance Run. In my opinion, the beauty of running is that it provides endless amounts of opportunities for a runner to set personal goals – whether they are to improve fitness, to travel to new places, to make new friends, to run faster times, or to achieve any other sort of personal satisfaction.

This clinic is 5 weeks in length with 2 sessions per week. Wednesday at 630pm and Saturday at 930am. A headlamp is MANDATORY for the Wednesday evening runs

I have competed in over 500 running events ranging in distance from 400 meters to 550 miles and have also represented Canada 5 times at the World 100km Championships. I have a personal best in the marathon of 2:32:04 but mostly run ultra marathons, 200 of them to be exact! In 2010, I set the Canadian Record for 50 miles on trail in a time of 5:54:15. I have been coaching and teaching clinics for nearly a decade. I love helping people progress as runners and I look forward to running some miles with you!
